Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican, took to social media on Saturday to call on President Donald Trump to impose an embargo on diesel exports. The request comes as diesel prices have climbed sharply, putting pressure on farmers, truckers and other industries that rely on the fuel.
In his post, Grassley wrote: “why doesn’t Pres Trump put an embargo on diesel exports like presidents in the 70s put embargoes on ag[riculture] products bc [because] food prices were inflated,” Grassley wrote on social media Saturday night.
The senator framed the proposal as a way to mirror historic actions taken by previous administrations. During the 1970s, presidents used export restrictions on agricultural commodities to stabilize domestic food costs. Grassley argued a similar approach could help curb diesel costs that have risen alongside broader inflation.
Energy analysts note that diesel inventories have tightened this year due to increased demand from manufacturing and transportation sectors. While the administration has released strategic petroleum reserves, diesel supplies have remained constrained, leading to higher pump prices for consumers and increased operating costs for businesses.
Grassley’s call adds to a growing chorus of lawmakers who are urging the White House to consider export controls. The senator emphasized that protecting domestic fuel availability is essential for maintaining the nation’s supply chain and supporting rural economies that depend on affordable diesel.
The White House has not yet responded publicly to Grassley’s request. It remains unclear whether the administration will consider an embargo or opt for alternative measures such as releasing additional diesel from strategic reserves.
