Sony Announces 40TF PS6 GPU as Nintendo Shows Switch 2 Demo

Sony unveiled a 40‑teraflop GPU and 56‑teraflop Helix AI accelerator for the PlayStation 6, while Nintendo demoed the Switch 2, heralding a next‑gen gaming era.

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that the PlayStation 6 will be powered by a custom GPU capable of 40 teraflops of compute performance, while its Helix accelerator will reach 56 teraflops. Both silicon dies have been taped out, the company confirmed in a technical briefing on Wednesday.

"The PS6 GPU delivers 40 teraflops, and the Helix processor hits 56 teraflops," a Sony spokesperson said. "These figures reflect the next generation of graphics and AI processing power for our console platform."

Switch 2 gains new demo features

Nintendo released a public demo of Stellar Blade: Complete Edition for the Switch 2 on Wednesday. The demo includes an option to turn off frame generation, giving players control over latency and visual fidelity.

Game director Hiroshi Tanaka explained that the toggle lets users prioritize either smooth frame rates or higher resolution, depending on personal preference.

Additional titles and announcements

Sonic Team confirmed development of a new Sonic the Hedgehog game, describing its gameplay as "unprecedented" in a press release. The studio did not disclose a release window.

THQ announced a free upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Epic Mickey when the title launches later this year. The upgrade will be available at no extra cost to owners of the original game.

In related hardware news, Sony unveiled a limited‑edition PlayStation 5 DualSense controller themed after K‑pop star Lisa, while Xbox reportedly plans to cut hundreds of jobs and consolidate several studios in its next layoff wave.

Industry observers noted that the disclosed PS6 specs place the console ahead of competing hardware in raw compute power, though real‑world performance will depend on software optimization and developer support.
