World Health Organization Director‑General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus concluded the first day of a two‑day state visit to Jordan, emphasizing the deepening partnership on universal health coverage, mental health and humanitarian health action.

Broadening universal health coverage

During meetings with Jordanian officials, Tedros said the country’s drive to provide essential health services to all citizens aligns with WHO’s global agenda. He noted that Jordan’s reforms have expanded primary‑care networks and improved access to essential medicines.

Mental‑health collaboration

Both sides highlighted joint efforts to scale community‑based mental‑health programs. The health ministry outlined recent training for clinicians and the rollout of crisis‑intervention services in schools. Tedros praised these steps as critical for reducing the treatment gap for mental disorders.

Humanitarian health action

Jordan’s role as a host for displaced populations makes humanitarian health a priority. WHO staff discussed ongoing support for emergency medical kits, disease‑surveillance systems and mobile clinics that serve vulnerable groups. The partnership, he said, demonstrates how coordinated action can mitigate health risks in crisis settings.

Jordan’s Minister of Health affirmed that technical assistance from WHO has strengthened the country’s capacity to respond to outbreaks and to sustain long‑term health system improvements. He added that continued collaboration will focus on data‑driven planning and resilient service delivery.

The visit will continue with site visits to health facilities and discussions on future joint projects. Both parties expressed confidence that the strengthened alliance will accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal targets for health by 2030.
