WHO Director-General stresses philanthropy’s role at Asia summit
During the Philanthropy Asia Summit in Singapore on 5–7 May 2025, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised the Temasek Foundation and the Philanthropy Asia Alliance for convening global health leaders. He highlighted Singapore’s leadership and thanked President Tharman for the city‑state’s continued support to WHO.
Key benefits of strategic philanthropic partnership
According to WHO, collaboration with philanthropic actors delivers the following advantages:
- Strengthening essential health services and advancing universal health coverage.
- Providing resources and expertise to build more accessible health‑care systems.
- Complementing and amplifying government and international organization efforts.
- Enabling innovative, high‑risk research that traditional funding may overlook.
- Raising awareness and advocating for policies that reduce health disparities.
During the Investment Round, WHO secured early pledges from Singapore and the Temasek Foundation, among the first donors to commit support. “We look forward to your continued leadership and partnership as we work together to realize WHO’s founding vision: the highest attainable standard of health – not as a luxury for some, but a right for all,” said Dr Tedros.
Looking ahead, WHO’s Fourteenth General Programme of Work will rely heavily on these partnerships to achieve health equity worldwide. By leveraging the strengths of governments, international bodies, and philanthropies, the organization aims to deliver better health outcomes and maximize impact for populations in need.
