EIB and WHO Sign €10 Million Grant for Lebanese Healthcare

The European Investment Bank and the World Health Organization signed a €10 million grant agreement in Luxembourg to support public health infrastructure and essential medical services across Lebanon.

World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and European Investment Bank Vice-President Thomas Östros finalized the agreement during the EIB Group Forum. The grant provides direct financial backing to strengthen health facilities and address acute medical shortages in the country.

Central Laboratory Restoration

A primary objective of the funding is the re-establishment of Lebanon's Central Public Health Laboratory. The facility serves as a vital institution for diagnostic testing, disease surveillance, and national health monitoring.

The restoration of the laboratory aims to rebuild core diagnostic capacities across the national public health network. Rebuilding these facilities enables public health officials to track disease trends and process essential diagnostic tests efficiently.

Chronic Disease Medication Support

The funding directs critical resources toward direct patient care, prioritizing essential medication provision and healthcare support for more than 50,000 people across Lebanon.

The targeted medical assistance focuses on individuals managing severe chronic conditions. These include:

  • Diabetes treatments and care management
  • Cardiovascular care and specialized pharmaceutical access
  • Cancer therapeutics and ongoing oncology support

Healthcare providers will distribute the acquired medicines through established medical channels to reach vulnerable patient populations requiring long-term treatments.

Institutional Collaboration

The agreement reflects coordinated operations between international development finance and global public health leadership. EIB Global, the specialized development arm of the European Investment Bank, manages the financial structure of the grant allocation.

The World Health Organization oversees the implementation of public health measures funded by the grant, working alongside health authorities to execute the laboratory restoration and medicine delivery programs across Lebanese communities.
