Passengers subdue attacker on Flydubai flight, divert to Saudi Arabia

Passengers and crew stopped a cockpit attack on a Flydubai Dubai‑Tel Aviv flight, forcing a diversion to Saudi Arabia and averting a potential disaster.

Passengers and crew stopped a man who attempted to take control of a Flydubai aircraft bound for Tel Aviv, forcing the plane to land in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

Attack in the cabin

Shortly after take‑off from Dubai, a passenger approached the cockpit and allegedly stabbed the pilot. The assailant then tried to move forward, but several passengers intervened. One passenger, Yaniv Hayoun, said the attacker was "neutralized" within seconds.

According to airline officials, the aircraft descended sharply for about 35 seconds before stabilising. Flight data shows a loss of altitude of nearly 20,000 feet during the incident.

Rapid response

Cabin crew and passengers worked together to restrain the suspect. "Everyone acted heroically," said another traveler who asked to remain unnamed. The pilot, who survived the stabbing, regained control of the aircraft after the attacker was subdued.

Flydubai dispatched the plane to King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, where Saudi authorities took custody of the suspect. The airline announced that the aircraft will undergo a thorough inspection before returning to service.

Authorities investigate motive

UAE aviation officials opened an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack. No group claimed responsibility, and the suspect's identity has not been released. Saudi police are interviewing passengers and crew to piece together a timeline.

The incident prompted the United Arab Emirates’ civil aviation authority to issue a statement urging airlines to review security protocols on short‑haul flights. "We are working closely with our partners to ensure passenger safety," the authority said.

Impact on passengers

All passengers were de‑planed unharmed and provided with accommodation in Riyadh. Flydubai is arranging alternate transportation to Tel Aviv for those who wish to continue their journey.

The event has reignited debate over cockpit security and the role of passengers in emergency situations. Aviation experts say the swift action of the cabin crew and travelers likely prevented a far worse outcome.
